Can Reflexology Help Postnatal Recovery?

"I've just had a baby and I'm exhausted"...

You spent nine months growing a human. Now you are running on no sleep, your body is recovering, your hormones are all over the place and everyone’s attention is on the baby. But what about you?

The postnatal period is often called the fourth trimester and it deserves just as much care and attention as pregnancy itself. Reflexology offers you something really simple but incredibly powerful, an hour that is completely yours, where you can breathe, relax and feel properly looked after.

Can reflexology help with postnatal recovery?

After birth your body goes through an enormous amount of change as it begins to recover and rebalance. Reflexology supports your body’s natural recovery process, helping to rebalance your hormones, reduce exhaustion and support your physical and emotional wellbeing as you adjust to life with your new baby.

Can reflexology help with postnatal exhaustion?

The tiredness that comes with a new baby is unlike anything else. Reflexology encourages your body into a deep state of genuine rest and recovery, helping to restore your energy levels even when a full night of sleep feels like a distant memory. Many new mums tell me they leave a session feeling more human than they have in weeks.

Can reflexology help with postnatal anxiety?

Feeling anxious after having a baby is incredibly common and yet so often goes unsupported. The relentlessness of new motherhood, the worry about doing everything right, the loss of your old self, reflexology offers a calm, nurturing space to help settle your nervous system and restore a sense of you beyond being a new mum.

Can reflexology help with postnatal low mood?

Low mood after having a baby can range from the baby blues in the early days to something that lingers much longer. Reflexology is not a replacement for professional medical support and if you are struggling please do speak to your GP or midwife. However many women find reflexology a really valuable complementary support, helping to lift their mood, calm their nervous system and restore a sense of balance and wellbeing. If you are experiencing postnatal depression please always seek professional care first.

Can reflexology help with hormonal changes after birth?

After birth your hormones go through a dramatic shift as your body transitions out of pregnancy. This can affect your mood, your energy, your sleep and how you feel in yourself. Reflexology supports your endocrine system to encourage better hormonal balance, helping to smooth out some of those highs and lows as your body finds its new normal.

Can reflexology help with breastfeeding support?

Many new mums find reflexology helpful during the breastfeeding period, particularly for supporting relaxation and reducing the stress and tension that can sometimes interfere with milk supply. Every experience is different and I always take a full consultation before your first session to make sure the treatment is tailored to exactly where you are.

When can I have reflexology after giving birth?

There is no fixed rule but most women find they are ready for a treatment from around two to four weeks after birth, once the initial recovery period has passed. I always recommend checking with your midwife or GP if you are unsure and I will always carry out a full consultation before your first appointment. Mobile treatments mean I can come to you at home, so there is no need to worry about travelling with a newborn.
