Can Reflexology Help During Pregnancy and Post-Natal?
"I'm growing a human and I want to feel my best"...
Sore back, swollen ankles, nausea, broken sleep, anxiety about the birth — pregnancy is one of the most incredible things your body will ever do, but it can also be really hard on it. And once your baby arrives, the recovery, the exhaustion and the emotional rollercoaster of the postnatal period can feel completely overwhelming.
Reflexology has been at the heart of my practice since I qualified as a Complementary Therapist in 2017, but my journey supporting women through pregnancy and birth began even earlier. I trained as a Hypnobirthing teacher in 2013 and turned to reflexology as a way to support the women I was working with even further. Although I now mostly work with women navigating perimenopause and menopause, supporting women through pregnancy, birth and beyond remains particularly special to me.
Can reflexology help with back pain and sciatica during pregnancy?
As your body changes and your centre of gravity shifts, back pain and sciatica are incredibly common during pregnancy. Reflexology helps to ease muscular tension, support your nervous system and encourage better circulation, which can bring real relief from that persistent ache and discomfort.
Can reflexology help with swollen ankles and fluid retention during pregnancy?
Swelling in the ankles, feet and hands is very common during pregnancy, particularly in the later stages. Reflexology supports your lymphatic system and circulation, helping your body to process and eliminate excess fluid more efficiently and reducing that uncomfortable puffiness.
Can reflexology help with anxiety during pregnancy?
Feeling anxious during pregnancy is completely normal but that does not make it any easier to live with. Worries about the birth, about becoming a parent, about everything changing, reflexology helps to calm your nervous system and quieten that anxious mind, helping you to feel more grounded, more present and more able to enjoy this special time.
Can reflexology help with sleep problems during pregnancy?
Between the physical discomfort, the trips to the bathroom and the racing mind, sleep during pregnancy can be really difficult. Reflexology encourages your body into a deep state of relaxation, supporting better quality sleep so you can rest as well as possible during this important time.
Can reflexology help me prepare for labour?
Preparing your body and mind for labour is something I feel incredibly passionate about. Reflexology in the final weeks of pregnancy can help to encourage your body into a state of readiness, supporting hormonal balance, easing anxiety and helping you to feel calm and prepared. Having trained and practiced as a Hypnobirthing teacher for several years, I understand the profound impact that a calm, relaxed nervous system can have on your birth experience.
Can reflexology help with postnatal recovery?
The postnatal period is often referred to as the fourth trimester and it deserves just as much care and attention as pregnancy itself. Reflexology supports your body’s natural recovery process after birth, helping to rebalance your hormones, reduce exhaustion and support your physical and emotional wellbeing as you adjust to life with your new baby.
Can reflexology help with postnatal anxiety and low mood?
The emotional impact of new motherhood is not talked about nearly enough. Postnatal anxiety and low mood are incredibly common and can feel really isolating. Reflexology offers a gentle, nurturing space just for you, helping to calm your nervous system, support hormonal rebalancing and restore a sense of yourself beyond being a new mum. If you are experiencing postnatal depression please do speak to your GP or midwife, reflexology can be a wonderful complementary support but is not a replacement for professional care.
Can reflexology help with fertility?
Many women come to me when they are trying to conceive, looking for ways to support their body and mind during what can be a really stressful and emotional time. Reflexology supports hormonal balance, reduces stress and encourages your body into a state of deep relaxation, all of which can create a more favourable environment for conception. It is important to note that reflexology is a complementary therapy and cannot guarantee or directly cause pregnancy, but many of my clients have found it a really valuable part of their fertility journey.
Is reflexology safe during pregnancy?
From the second trimester onwards, reflexology can be a wonderful support throughout pregnancy. I always recommend letting your midwife or GP know that you are having reflexology, and I will always take a full consultation before your first appointment to make sure the treatment is appropriate for you. Your safety and your baby’s safety is always my absolute priority.
